FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What can I expect in our first private session?
We will book the first session for a time where it is convenient for both of us. After we have a firm booking the deposit is due and I will send you a service agreement to sign. On the day, set aside an hour and a half to two hours for our first session so we can set some goals, take a more thorough history and get to know each other. No matter how long our sessions are there is no extra charge. We charge by the session, not the hour. Our first session will be foundational work and getting started on the work necessary to achieve your goals. A single session is not likely to resolve problems and likely, subsequent visits will be needed. Packages are available at a more economical price.
What kind of training do you do?
I am a Force-Free trainer. This means I have spent thousands of dollars, many years and a lot of effort to educate myself on the best way to modify or shape behaviour without doing any other harms. I have learned to eliminate the need for aversive tools like shock, prong and choke collars as they have a lasting and problematic effect on welfare and behaviour. Staying up to date on the ever-changing world of dog training is important for me and I continue to take advantage of educational opportunities every single month. I set aside time to stay up to date to ensure my clients are getting excellent information and advice. I urge you to read more on this topic on our blog post Suppression vs. Modification and our resource on The D Word
What do we learn in the Mensa Mutts class?
We will go through all the basics like sit, down, stay, stand, etc. as well as loose leash walking, walking with distractions, recall and even cooperative care. We teach a 6 week, comprehensive course that covers everything you need to shape an excellent canine citizen as we know that only 20% of students will go on to take advanced courses. So we try to give you everything you need in this course. Of course, if you want more, we are happy to provide you with private sessions or our level up class which happens once a year in multiple locations to work those behaviours in real world environments.
Do you train all breeds?
I have worked with most breeds of dogs over the years. There is no distinguishable difference between the ability to learn for a Yorkshire Terrier or a Mastiff. The main differences will come in motivations and drives for certain behaviours. I will train any and all breeds. Learning theory applies to all creatures on earth (and yes, dog training has made me into an excellent human behaviour student as well) and we will get to the root causes, drives and motivations that bring about problematic behaviours for any and all breeds to come up with an easily manageable plan for effective behaviour change.
Do you offer a guarantee?
Absolutely not. Every dog training association I belong to prohibits their members from offering a guarantee as it is completely unethical to do so. We cannot guarantee the behaviour of your dog, nor your behaviour. I will endeavour to give you the most up to date, practical information and ensure you are able to continue the work. I will offer continued support and advice.
